Longs Peak NF (Cables) 4/29/09 8 Years, 1 Month ago

The alarm went off at 2:25am. The weather models showed strong winds (up to 50 knots), then they dropped to light after about 11 or so.
Still on the fence, I decided i'd think about it for a while.
Next thing I knew, it was 7 and the sun was out in full force.
I left Boulder at a leisurely 8 am, ate lots of chocolate covered espresso beans on the drive, and left the TH at 9:30.
I made haste up the trail, passing just one old man. Stopped for a quick chat: "where you headed" he said. "To check out the NF of Longs" I said.
He motioned with his head as if to say "Well, you'd better keep moving".
And I was off.
The climb up the crux was fairly easy, two balancy moves. I'd say it was easy 5th, or M2+.
Topped out in 4.5 hours after leaving the TH.
The wind was calm to light on the summit, and the face was staying cold and dry. Glad I waited.
The skiing was variable but super fun and aesthetic.
I rapped the crux from the huge eye bolts, then rode continuous snow down to the lot.

Beautiful day in the mountains.

Talked to a couple guys who camped and attempted the route earlier, but turned back due to wind/fatigue....
The route might be in for another week tops, but that was probably the last day you could ski continuous snow all the way.

Nice work, despite the slacker start. I am currently weighed down preparing for finals, but plan to come back strong for May and June. On the list is Hallet's Hallway, Dead Dog, a second attempt at the Cross Couloir and whatever else seems interesting.

I am taking summer classes so I will only be a weekend warrior, but let me know if you are interested in any of those or if you are cooking up something.

How much of the line were you able to ride?

I rode all but the technical section: from right next to the summit, down the face, then rapped 1 20m and another 10m right below that using the eyebolts on each, then all the way down to the lot...

Kevin- The top of Hallets looked real filled in, you could probly ski from near the top. I got 10 days to get after it starting thursday...
